Constipation is very common and means either passing hard or painful bowel motions or going to the toilet less often than usual to pass a motion. For some people, it's quite normal to have a poo three times a day, while for other people it's quite normal to go just three times a week. If you need to have a poo more or less often for you, there may be something wrong.
Symptoms that mean you should see a doctor for an examination and tests:
Make sure you are following the lifestyle recommendations:
Coloxyl - works by softening the stools and making the bowel work harder to squeeze the feces out of the bowel. To start with it is usual to take 1-2 tablets at night and adjust the dose based on the response. Possible side effects include abdominal cramps, and long-term use can lead to a "lazy bowel" that is less active on its own.
Lactulose - works by keeping water in your gut (intestines), and so keeping the poo softer. Lactulose can take up to two days to have any effect so it is not suitable for the rapid relief of constipation. Possible side-effects of Lactulose include abdominal pain and bloating.
